Join Historic Pittsford on Tuesday, February 25th at 7:00 PM at the Spiegel Pittsford Community Center as they sponsor "Pathway of Resistance: The Erie Canal and the Underground Railroad," presented by Derrick Pratt, Director of Education and Public Programming at the Erie Canal Museum. This talk examines the experience of African-Americans along the Erie Canal Corridor, with a particular focus on the struggle for abolition. While parts of this story are unpleasant, slavery, racism, and resistance are critical to understanding our society today. This presentation is free and open to the public; registration is unnecessary.

Office Closed for Presidents' Day 2025

Village Hall and the DPW will be closed on Monday, February 17th, in observance of Presidents' Day. We will reopen for regular business hours on Tuesday, February 18th.

A message from Mayor Plummer

ERIE CANAL BICENTENNIAL

2025 is a special year as we celebrate the 200th Anniversary of the Erie Canal’s completion! The village will host several events throughout the season acknowledging our rich history and heritage as a canal port. A major highlight will be the arrival of the Seneca Chief on Sunday, September 28th.

The Seneca Chief is a hand-built replica of the boat Dewitt Clinton used to travel from Buffalo to New York City, performing the famous “Marrying of the Waters” at the intersection of the canal and the Hudson River along the way. The entire voyage will be re-enacted with water from Pittsford being included in the ceremony.

The Seneca Chief will be escorted into the village by a flotilla including the Colonial Belle, Riverie, and our beloved Sam Patch. The three smaller boats will be docked for roughly two hours during lunchtime, where on-board tours will be conducted.

A portion of the Schoen place road will be closed off at that time for pedestrian traffic as we will be holding a brief welcome ceremony and music performances along with historic and informational exhibits. We are reaching out to our businesses and local organizations as we would like to have an outdoor “All-American Picnic” between 11-1 pm for residents, guests and visitors.

This is an opportunity to showcase our beautiful village and bring our friends, neighbors, and visitors together for a fun-filled historic event!

Village Refuse District Assessment

Tuesday, February 11, 2025, at 6 pm

____________________________________________________________________________________

 Hi Neighbors,

In May of 2024 the Trustees adopted a village-wide refuse district. In December 2024, a two-year contract was awarded by the village board to Seyrek Disposal.

  • Trash and recycling will be picked up weekly, on the same day, throughout the entire village.
  • Residents will be provided with a 96-gallon refuse tote and a 64-gallon recycling tote. These totes are on wheels and have lids. A larger recycling tote has an up-charge of $5 per month.
  • Residents wishing to have additional totes or additional services must contact Seyrek directly. (585) 720-0978.
  • A flat rate of $349.14 (called an assessment) is added to the annual tax bill for each household. Prices can vary across municipalities as each may have different economies of scale.

Village in Bloom

A big thank you to Scout Troops 11 and 167 and Pack 291 for planting 500 bulbs this past Saturday as part of our Village In Bloom program. Look for the purple, white, and lavender allium bulbs to bloom along the Washington Road median this spring. Well done, everyone!

Stormwater and Fall Leaf Collection

As the vibrant colors of fall fade, the leaves create beautiful ground cover—but when piled in roadways, they can lead to stormwater and safety concerns. The Village of Pittsford is part of the Monroe County Stormwater Coalition, and we’re committed to keeping our storm sewer system in top shape.

Piling leaves in roadways or gutters can clog the storm sewer system and cause bigger problems, especially during severe weather. To help us maintain these essential systems, we kindly ask residents to keep leaves within grassy areas as much as possible.

Our crews are working hard to collect leaves throughout the Village, and we truly appreciate your cooperation in keeping our community safe and our systems running smoothly. Thank you for doing your part!

Monroe County, Yard Waste

With leaves, brush and yard waste in abundance, fall is the right time of the year to talk about the management of this category of organics.

Monroe County, NY - Organics Recycling, Food Scraps and Composting

In Monroe County, yard waste is prohibited from being disposed in a landfill.

Sticks, branches, brush, grass and leaves take up valuable landfill space. Additionally, this is not the best, highest use of these materials – leaves and grass can be composted and wood debris can be chipped and used for mulch.

Helpful fall hints:

  • Skip raking and bagging and chop or mow-mulch leaves with your mower and leave them on the lawn. When these little pieces of leaves decompose, they break down into natural mulch, which suppresses weeds and provides nutrients.
  • Leaves also are the foundation of any compost pile – mix leaves with “green” materials, such as grass clippings, place in a pile, and keep moist – and you’ll have ready-made compost for gardening in the Spring.
  • If you are looking to add compost to gardens or lawns in the fall, don’t forget – compost made from Monroe County leaves is available to Monroe County residents twice a week, every week - FREE - at the Monroe County / WM ecopark. Bring your own container and a shovel!

Local Law 4: Short-term Rentals

On July 11, 2023, The Board of Trustees enacted a 6-month moratorium on short-term rentals (STRs) in the Village of Pittsford. It goes into effect immediately. Existing STRs are not affected by this moratorium.

The purpose of the moratorium is to press a “pause button” on any new STRs to allow an assessment of the impact, if any, on the village environment and its residents. A Short-term Rental Citizen Advisory Committee has been established and will be working during this time to evaluate the impact of STRs on the community and make recommendations to the Trustees regarding possible legislation, or not.

Any property owners establishing an STR during this time will violate the moratorium code and be subject to fines.

For more information and to review the moratorium law go to:
